The team/department:
You will be joining Western Power’s Operational Technology-Protection area within the Engineering & Desing function. Engineering & Desing’s purpose is to deliver excellence in engineering and design solutions that deliver for our customers and the Western Australian community.
We do this by being Western Power’s source for any technical, engineering or design enquiries and design solution services. We focus on safety, value for money, operability and innovation and provide design and technical standards/specifications, concept and detailed designs, advisory support and network/plant expertise.
Operational Technology-Protection area provides design services, engineering assessments, technical support and design standards relating to Western Power’s Power System Protection Asset class. We are involved in the delivery of all projects related to capacity expansion, asset replacement, customer connections, and outsourcing of secondary systems. We follow these projects from conception to commissioning, after which we provide ongoing support as a guarantee of our work.
What you will be doing:
As a Senior Protection Engineer, you will be focussing on the following:
- Undertake electrical engineering protection design and settings work of high complexity including automatic control for assigned projects, determining CT/VT performance requirements, and undertaking system modelling and fault studies
- Prepare detailed scopes and overall estimates for the protection and automatic control component of the full range of transmission projects (of all levels of complexity) and coordinate with other specialist groups
- Prepare detailed engineering specifications, analyse tenders, manage contracts and initiate purchase of protection and automatic control equipment
- Provide engineering consultancy advice to internal stakeholders and external customers to assist them in options analysis, risk analysis, scope definition and protection implementation for the full range of transmission projects (of all levels of complexity)
- Review customer/IPP protection designs and settings for compliance with Technical Codes;

The skills and experience you will have:
We are seeking someone with experience and attributes that include:
- Degree in electrical engineering recognised by Engineers Australia as satisfying the academic requirements for appointment as a professional engineer
- Eligibility for corporate membership of Engineers Australia
- Extensive knowledge of transmission and distribution protection settings and design, automatic control and statistical metering systems design and estimating processes
- Sound knowledge of power system primary and secondary facilities
- High level understanding and knowledge of engineering standards, regulations, Technical Rules and procedures applicable to protection schemes
- Knowledge of current technological developments in the field of protection, automatic control and statistical metering
- Valid WA Driver’s License Class ‘C’ or ‘C-A’
